Current Ongoing Projects

A 17th Century Minute Book

The collapse of the tightback structure of this binding had caused damage to almost all of the sections when the spine leather had been pulled free from the textblock.

The most severe damage had occurred to the outer page of each quire but some of the sewing thread had been pulled through the pages in places so extensive repairs to many of the pages was required.

Some of the sections showed evidence of damage caused by the injudicious use of 17th Century drying sand. The sand was trapped in the book and the acidic nature of the grains caused damage to the surface of the paper causing further harm.

Due to the constraints of time with this project Filmo Plast repair tissue paper was used. The heat activated adhesive was applied using a tacking iron and with this method each page could be repaired and the sections completed fairly rapidly.
